Wholemeal Chocolate and Banana Cake

In the spirit of trying to keep healthy and for all the people that have taken up baking as a hobby or something to pass the time during the lockdown, it might be worth looking at some healthier recipes.

With everyone seemingly mad about making banana bread right now, I thought I’d show you how to put a healthier spin on it.


  • 2 -3 ripe bananas
  • 110g/4oz soft light brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 120ml/4fl oz sunflower or vegetable oil
  • 225g/8oz stoneground wholemeal flour
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 100g/3.5oz dark chocolate chunks or chopped chocolate.

Let’s cook!

Grease and line a loaf tin and preheat the oven to 150°/gas 2

Wang everything except the chocolate in a mixer and zap until creamy and smooth.

Add in the dark chocolate, stirring lightly with your spatula

Pour into the prepared tin and bake for approximately 55 minutes.

It should be springy to touch and a skewer will come out clean when cooked.

Cool completely in the tin.

Serve with a lovely brew.
